Meet Goliath….

Rupert started building his unique houseboat some 8 years ago. Now moored on the River Thames its watery location can be quite chilly in winter. To heat its quirky spaces, he chose Kiasa’s smart infrared panels. Using their programmable facility, Rupert can warm specific areas instantly, via his phone, making Goliath’s heating as flexible as his lifestyle as a model and film extra.

Goliath is a rather eclectic living space (you’ll never find another like her). She has forward and aft cabins, a main saloon midships, and two loos-cum-shower spaces. The conundrum was how do you practically but cost effectively heat collection of small spaces.

The Need For Lateral Thinking

Like most barges and houseboats Goliath has a central wood-burner which looks lovely but takes time to fire up and generate warmth. Rupert didn’t want to add a conventional system – boilers and radiators are expensive, take up space, take time to install, and work out costly to run. Given that throughout the year Goliath is connected to mains power from the shore, Rupert wanted a ‘plug and play’ solution.

Great Spatial Awareness

A major benefit for Goliath and its owner who often works on location or at various studios with very early starts, is that Kiasa’s solution of programmable smart heaters means different ‘spaces’ can be ‘turned on’ and heated as and when required from Rupert’s mobile phone. On cold dark mornings he can wake to instant heat in his bedroom and go to a pre-warmed shower cubicle.

At weekends, after a Sunday pint at his local, he can turn on the heating on his way back and start cooking lunch in the warmth while the log-burner gets going. He never needs to heat the whole boat, rather turning on instant heat space-by-space as needed.

An Elegantly Cost-effective, Solution

As a jobbing actor work can be uncertain and money is never far from Rupert’s mind. ‘Kiasa Infra-Red heaters save me money. I never feel that I’m wasting heat and I really like the ergonomic unintrusive design.’

As you can imagine, having built Goliath, Rupert is pretty handy when it comes to DIY. In his case he easily installed the units himself, simply hanging them on the wall and plugging them in. Now no matter what the weather, everything is completely ship shape!
