Drying Out The Damp – Top Down

Gill lives less than 20m from the River Thames in a lovely waterfront apartment on the main riverside walk so popular with joggers and dog walkers.

But despite the fact that it’s the sort of lovely, airy, open-plan space that would attract attention from lifestyle and design magazines it has one big drawback – damp! The problem is a design feature of the development, a terrace garden, right above her flat creates a gap that traps cold, moisture-laden air, making her entire space prone to damp and chill. Despite its modern design, keeping it warm and dry is a real challenge.

The Roof-top Garden Conundrum

The development is one of those that have blossomed all along the south bank of the Thames to the west of Vauxhall Bridge. It’s an upscale community, designed to optimise work-life balance and includes open garden spaces, some at a raised level, one of which sits right on top of Gill’s apartment roof. For structural purposes there is a gap of over a metre between Gill’s ceiling and the platform that supports the garden floor.

And thereby hangs the problem. The gap fills with cool air, the fact the building is next to the river means a lot of moisture, and the result is ‘Damp’. Along with one of the words most often associated with ‘damp’ – which is ‘cold’.

Energy Consumption ‘through The Roof’

To start with, to try to eliminate the damp, Gill turned her boiler up, simply to find that her energy consumption literally went through the roof. Despite her efforts and increased bills, the damp persisted.

She approached Kiasa for a solution and was immediately impressed by our thoughtful approach to the problem.

Minimised Damp, Maximised Tactical Heating At Minimal Cost

Watch the video and you’ll see the combination of Infra-Red panels and bars that were installed in different areas in less than a day. The results were immediate. In the first place the damp has been eliminated. In addition, rather than heat an entire space with a high ceiling, Gill can heat individual areas of her open plan room. At the same time she has dramatically reduced her heating bills.

The entire installation costs and service impressed her:
‘Working with Kiasa was so straightforward and efficient,’ she says. ‘The purchase cost was surprisingly low, the installation was quickly caried out and the advice and follow-up service I have received has been extremely professional.’
